Don't most of us love the images that we see in design magazines that are bold and gutsy? No, not ugly gutsy, but beautiful and bold in their striking design statement.
Why do many of us not design like that in our own homes? Do we think its too expensive? Would it take too much work? I say no to both of those thoughts.
Take a look at the image to the left. It is bold and gutsy. What makes it that way?
- Bold color on the cabinets
- Bold chandelier/lighting
- Big, gutsy mirror/accessories
If you look carefully, everything else is simple and spare. There is not a lot of 'stuff' or furniture...just a few big statements that aren't overpowering, but that give this space zip and a personality.
Take a look around a room in your house that you feel is blah. Take some of the furniture out, and remove a lot of the accessories and small art work. Now, go into all your other rooms and pick the biggest, and boldest art work and accessories and put it in the blah room. Can you introduce a stronger color into the room with pillows, a comforter, throw blanket, or rug? Get a little gutsy...and move things around.
What will make it work for you? Keep all the other parts of the room simple and spare...so that the bold statements are not overpowering. Use what you have and don't be afraid of 'oomph', larger and more colorful! Remember, it's not the whole room that is gutsy, but just a few powerful statements.
